Totally brilliant, and scary that it makes utter sense. Thanks for all the geek knowledge too! I didn't watch The Last of Us because I'd heard about the ableist take and didn't want to put myself through it 🤯. And on siding with outsiders is it weird I found myself identifying with Frankenstein when we read it for my book group earlier this year? Of course I didn't dare say, but it made me get some ideas for a "things I never said at book group" sort of post.

This piece made me realize just how ignorant and lazy I've been about power dynamics in zombie apocalypse scenarios. (and a lot more)

I've never watched The Last of Us because I'm very squeamish when it comes to TV/movies so anything zombie, horror, etc is a no-go (my ex-bf did drag me to see I Am Legend however lol). But I absolutely love how your juxtaposed zombies/infection with how disabled people are seen, especially during and after the pandemic--as disposable basically. I don't think I've ever fully stopped carrying around the weight of the fact that people were just happy to let me die from 2020 on because my life isn't a real life anyway. Love your writing!

Sooooo even though I've only watched 'I am Legend' I followed everything you shared. I stopped watching any big dystopian storylines when I started caregiving - we had enough dark drama without watching the end of the world. Since fiction has become fact, I carefully filter with evidence-based references.

But, geez, films and series being used as propaganda for ableist agendas or even if it's as an apathetic ignorance/lack of accountability in terms of the storyline's impact, sickens me.

Where's the accountability and code of conduct...rhetorical question....

FYI 2015 film Our Brand is Crisis with Sandra Bullock, or remember Wag the Dog the 1997 film
